Croatia battles major wildfire on island of Vis

Climate

A large wildfire that broke out late Sunday night in the Podhumlje area near Komiža on the Croatian island of Vis is being battled by 70 local firefighters, supported by four Canadair water bombers and additional crews from the mainland as the blaze continues to spread, the County Fire Operations Centre reported on Monday.

The fire was reported at 10:29 p.m., and all available firefighting units from the Vis operational area were immediately dispatched to the scene, CE Report quotes HINA.

The operation involves firefighters from the Komiža and Vis Volunteer Fire Departments. Komiža deployed nine vehicles and 35 firefighters, while Vis sent six vehicles and 35 firefighters, bringing the total to 15 vehicles and 70 firefighters.

The wildfire remains active, with dry vegetation and the spread of flames across open terrain making firefighting efforts more difficult.

Three Canadair water bombers were deployed at 5:40 a.m. on Monday, while a fourth aircraft is on its way and will join the operation.

By decision of the Chief Fire Commander, additional firefighting crews from the mainland will travel to Vis on the first ferry from Split. According to the plan, eight vehicles carrying 34 firefighters will depart from the Port of Split for the island at 11:00 a.m.

At this stage, there are no reports of homes or other buildings being threatened or damaged by the fire.
