Poland Restores Border Checks
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland will temporarily reintroduce border controls with Germany and Lithuania starting June 1, citing a rise in illegal migration. The move comes amid Germany’s plans to extend its own border checks with Poland, in place since 2023, CE Report quotes PAP
The decision sparked criticism from right-wing figures, including Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who accused Germany of pushing undocumented migrants into Poland. Nationalist activists linked to Robert Bakiewicz’s Border Defence Movement have also begun patrolling the border without official approval.
President-elect Andrzej Duda’s successor, who is set to be sworn in on August 6, voiced support for these activists, thanking them for their “civic duty” and blaming Tusk for fueling division and border failures. He promised that border security will be restored once he takes office.
