Warsaw becomes 19th-century backdrop for cinematic retelling of The Doll

The space in front of St. Anne’s Church in Warsaw has become the set for the film adaptation of The Doll (Lalka) by Bolesław Prus. Passers-by heading toward Castle Square will see 19th-century carriages, hats, and dresses. Meanwhile, in the nearby House of Literature, scenes are being shot with Marcin Dorociński, playing Stanisław Wokulski, and Marek Kondrat as the film’s Ignacy Rzecki.

For Warsaw residents and tourists visiting the capital, this is yet another reason to head to Castle Square. That’s where the crew of The Doll, directed by Maciej Kawalski — the creator of Dangerous Gentlemen — has moved. It’s an opportunity to watch the film crew at work and perhaps spot some familiar faces among the cast and crew, CE Report quotes PAP.

Who will star in The Doll?
In the leading roles of this version of The Doll — while a second adaptation, a TV series, is also in production — Marcin Dorociński and Kamila Urzędowska portray the iconic Stanisław Wokulski and Izabela Łęcka. Marek Kondrat, making a rare screen appearance, plays Ignacy Rzecki. The cast also includes Agata Kulesza, Cezary Żak, Andrzej Seweryn, Maja Komorowska, Maria Dębska, and Karolina Gruszka.

What’s happening in the centre of Warsaw?
A series of photos from the The Doll set has been published on the City of Warsaw’s official Facebook page. Those unable to visit Castle Square can get a glimpse of the attractions prepared for this adaptation of a Polish literary classic. Extras dressed in period costumes stroll around the set, showcasing the large scale of Kawalski’s production.

The August filming in Warsaw will not be limited to Castle Square. The film crew will also be shooting in the Royal Łazienki Park, Aleja Róż, and on the Praga side of the Vistula River.
