Pop star Shakira held a free concert on Sunday evening in front of 400,000 spectators at Zócalo Square in Mexico City, setting a record for the largest audience ever gathered for a concert at this venue, DPA reports, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

“It’s a dream. How poetic it is to see this place so full of people,” said the 49-year-old singer in the largest square of the Mexican capital, surrounded by landmarks such as the illuminated cathedral and the National Palace.

This was Shakira’s second concert in the capital’s main square. Many people arrived hours before the show began to secure a good spot.

“Our hearts are still beating faster after what we experienced last night!” Mexico City’s mayor, Clara Brugada, wrote on X on Monday.

Thanks to Shakira, the square in the historic center of Mexico City was “filled with magic, music and incredible energy,” she added.

The Colombian singer had previously set another record in Mexico. The performer of “Hips Don’t Lie” took the stage at Estadio GNP for the 13th and final time on Friday, setting a record for the most appearances at the venue during her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” tour, a concert series that sold approximately 800,000 tickets.

Another major milestone awaits the pop star on May 2, when she will perform another free concert on the legendary Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. Last year, around 2.5 million people attended Lady Gaga’s concert there.
