Whilst many Poles still start their Christmas eve by looking out for the first star in the sky, before WWI Polish Christmas traditions were a mixture of both Christian and pagan influences. CE Report quoting The First News

These ranged from inviting animals to supper and believing they could speak with humans, putting hay under the tablecloth or placing a haystack in the corner of a room and seeking to pacify the restless souls of the dead by bringing them leftovers from the Wigilia supper.
