Serbia records multiple tremors following 4.1 magnitude quake
Many houses and the local Catholic church were damaged, but no one was injured after an earthquake that struck the village of Monoštor, near Bezdan in the Bačka Podunavlje region, Serbia, during the night between Monday and Tuesday.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale, and according to data from the Seismological Survey of Serbia (RSZ), it was recorded in the Bezdan area at 2:35 a.m, CE Report quotes HINA.
“The whole house was shaking, pictures fell off the walls. People ran out into the streets in the middle of the night, asking in fear what was happening,” said local Croatian community activist Davor Francuz, speaking to Croatian media in Vojvodina.
According to him, a large number of houses developed cracks in the walls, even newly built ones, but no injuries were reported.
Significant damage to the ceiling, where larger pieces of plaster fell off, occurred in the local Church of St. Peter and Paul. Because of this, Francuz said, the building inspectorate will visit the site to assess the condition of the sacred building after the earthquake.
There is still no information on damage in the nearby larger town of Bezdan.
The RSZ stated that the theoretical intensity at the epicenter was estimated at VI on the Mercalli scale, which can cause minor damage to buildings in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter.
After the initial quake, two weaker earthquakes were also recorded in Serbia, in the Bezdan region with magnitudes of 2.5, and in Divčibare with 2.3 on the Richter scale.
