Rural Shift Key to Food Security
Efforts to boost food security and economic resilience in developing nations must prioritize rural transformation, according to IFAD President Alvaro Lario. Speaking at the Islamic Development Bank Group’s meeting in Algiers, Lario emphasized that over half of the workforce in many countries is involved in food production, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
He stressed that rural development drives economic diversification, social inclusion, and climate resilience. With 80% of global poverty rooted in rural areas, Lario called for targeted investments and innovative programs.
Highlighting the IsDB’s $500 million support for agro-processing zones in Nigeria, Lario said such projects create jobs, enhance food systems, and address fragility and climate risks. He also underlined the importance of youth employment and responsive strategies for conflict-affected regions.
