Chakarov Steps Down as DRF-MRF Leader

Bulgaria

Dzhevdet Chakarov has announced his resignation as both floor leader and member of the Democracy, Rights and Freedoms – MRF (DRF-MRF) parliamentary group. His departure follows a meeting with Delyan Peevski, leader of the rival MRF – New Beginning faction. Chakarov said he stepped down to end divisions within the party and foster unity, CE Report quotes BTA

This move comes amid a deep rift within the MRF, which split in 2024 into two factions: one loyal to Ahmed Dogan (represented by DRF-MRF), and another led by Peevski (MRF – New Beginning). Chakarov’s resignation was seen by some as a personal decision, not a sign of reconciliation between the two camps.

The DRF-MRF quickly appointed Hayri Sadakov as their new floor leader. Opposition MPs, including Ivaylo Mirchev and Kiril Petkov, condemned Peevski’s influence, likening Chakarov’s resignation to a hostage crisis and warning of a creeping authoritarianism.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Cassation is expected to rule on the legality of changes to MRF’s party register following the split.
