Drone Incident at Sofia Airport Sparks Security Concerns

Bulgaria

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Grozdan Karadjov has called for enhanced airport security following a drone intrusion at Sofia Airport on February 7. The drone, weighing over 30 kilograms, disrupted six flights and demonstrated advanced maneuvering, raising concerns about its operator's intentions, CE Report quotes BTA

At a meeting with aviation and security officials, Karadjov emphasized the need for urgent measures to prevent unauthorized drone activity. He proposed a dual-layer security system: an "Iron Dome"-like perimeter defense at airports and a state-managed detection system covering a 20 km range.

Karadjov stressed that Bulgaria must update its legislation to address drone threats, incorporating military expertise in neutralization methods. He highlighted gaps in existing regulations, particularly regarding radio interference restrictions and legal challenges in prosecuting drone operators.

The Transport Ministry has tasked BULATSA with developing an early detection and tracking system for drones. Karadjov underscored the urgency, warning that drone incidents pose serious risks to flight safety. The Air Traffic Control Authority will submit a report on the incident by February 14.
