The Skopje International Airport and St. Paul the Apostle Ohrid Airport recorded 1.5 million passengers in the first 6 months of 2025, an increase of 5 percent compared to the same period last year, airport operator TAV Macedonia said in a press release Friday, CE Report quotes MIA.

In the same time period, the number of flights has increased by 3 percent, with Macedonian airports recording a total of 12,235 flights from January to June.

"We are pleased that in the first six months of this year we have recorded a steady increase in passenger traffic, which was contributed by the 8 new regular air routes that we have opened since the beginning of 2025 from Skopje and Ohrid airports, in cooperation with the airlines and the Government as our partner. Amsterdam (Transavia), Paris-Orly (easyJet), Lyon (Wizz Air), Barcelona (Wizz Air), Ankara (Ajet), Çukurova (Ajet) and Diyarbakir (Ajet) from Skopje and Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) from Ohrid. In addition to the regular and the seasonal routes, Freebird charter flights that bring tourists from 13 European cities have contributed to the growth and will continue to contribute until the end of the year. As TAV Macedonia management, we will continue to work on opening new routes and attracting new airlines in order they start flying from Macedonian soil, to create more diverse travel opportunities for our citizens, as well as for citizens from country’s neighborhood. Based on passengers demand, we are targeting tourist destinations on the Spanish and Italian coasts, as well as European capitals important for our economic, diplomatic and cultural ties with the countries of connection”, said Nejat Kurt, TAV Macedonia General Manager.

Kurt stated TAV Macedonia expects the stable growth in passenger traffic to continue until the end of the year, with the summer period expected to further contribute to the annual cumulative air traffic figures. In this regard, according to Kurt, in June alone, Skopje and Ohrid airports had 12% more passengers compared to the same period in 2024.

Semi-annual statistical data from TAV Macedonia show that in the first six months the most frequent destination from Skopje International Airport is Istanbul (both IGA and Sabiha Gokcen airports with 17.1% market share), followed by Basel Mulhouse (6.6%), Frankfurt (5.7%), Zurich (5%) and Munich-Memmingen (4.6%), Dortmund (4.5%) and Vienna (3.9%).

The top five countries with the most direct flights are Germany (26.5% market share in total passenger traffic), Turkiye (22.6%), Switzerland (11.6%), Italy (5.4%) and Sweden (4.2%).

If the figures for Skopje International Airport and Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport are analyzed separately, Skopje Airport has an annual increase of 4.47% and in the first six months of this year with a total of 1,423,039 passengers transported, while Ohrid St. Paul The Apostle Airport recorded a double-digit increase of a high 10.9% with 103,792 passengers transported from January to June.
