Cybercriminals stole a record $2.7 billion in cryptocurrencies in 2025, according to a new analysis by leading blockchain firms.

In 2025, cyberattacks targeting cryptocurrencies reached historic levels, with hackers stealing more than $2.7 billion in digital assets, according to a new analysis from blockchain security companies, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

According to data from Chainalysis and TRM Labs, dozens of serious security breaches were recorded across cryptocurrency exchanges, decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, and other services within the Web3 ecosystem throughout the year.

The largest blow came from the attack on the Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, where hackers stole approximately $1.4 billion—the largest single theft in the history of the industry. This incident alone accounted for about half of the total amount stolen in 2025.

As reported by CE Report, security experts and the FBI have linked this massive theft to state-sponsored hacker groups from North Korea, which were the most active actors in cyber thefts throughout the year.

In addition to Bybit, several other major attacks contributed to significant losses, including the theft of around $223 million from the decentralized exchange Cetus, about $128 million from the Balancer protocol, and more than $73 million from the Phemex exchange.
