Galileo Galilei’s early notes hint at Neptune discovery
On December 28, 1612, Galileo Galilei became the first astronomer to observe the planet Neptune, although he mistakenly identified it as a fixed star.
For this reason, Galileo is not recognized as the discoverer of Neptune, even though some scientists point out that in his notes the Italian astronomer remarked that the star appeared to be moving, which is a characteristic of planets,CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
As reported by CE Report, Galileo observed Neptune in December 1612 and again on January 28, 1613.
The scientist’s notes suggest that during the latter observation he saw Neptune move as it passed close to a star, but he did not pursue the matter further.
