Bulgarian athletes aim high at World Indoor Championships in Poland
Two sprinters and two jumpers will be competing for Bulgaria at World Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland, from March 20 to 22. It will be the first time since 2018 that Bulgaria participates in the World Indoor Championships with such a large team.
Bulgaria will be represented for the first time by two sprinters in the 60-metre event. The high qualifying standards for the championship were met by national record holder Hristo Iliev and the country’s second-fastest sprinter, Nikola Karamanolov, CE Report quotes BTA.
Bulgaria first had a 60-metre sprinter at the world indoor championships in 1987 in Indianapolis, US, when Valentin Atanasov competed.
Also meeting the qualifying standards for Torun are Bulgaria’s Athlete of the Year and national long jump record holder Bozhidar Saraboyukov, as well as triple jump champion Aleksandra Nacheva.
Georgi Pavlov, President of the Bulgarian Athletics Federation, said:
"I highly value the fact that Bulgaria will be represented by four athletes at the World Indoor Championships in Torun. This is not only the largest Bulgarian team for an indoor world championship in the past eight years, but also a clear sign of the level that Bulgarian athletics maintains amid increasingly strong international competition."
"With each passing year it becomes more difficult to meet the qualifying standards and earn a place at the World Championships. That is why the presence of four Bulgarian athletes is a serious achievement and the result of the focused work of the competitors, their coaches and their clubs. It is especially encouraging that we have two Bulgarian sprinters in the 60 metres. This achievement is a result of the strong internal competition in our men’s sprint events at the moment. I wish all our athletes success in Torun and believe they will realize their potential on the world stage," he added.
