
Winners of Sofia Marathon 2025 revealed
Kenyan runner Abraham Kiplimo won the men’s title at the 42nd edition of the Sofia Marathon, CE Report quotes BTA.
In his debut at the marathon distance, Kiplimo completed the classic 42.195 km in 2:17:11 hours, winning with a final sprint over his fellow countryman and last year’s champion, Shadrack Kimaiyo.
The two ran side by side throughout the race, and at the finish line, it appeared that Kimaiyo had won. However, Kiplimo was officially declared the winner and accepted the prize from Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev. According to the electronic timing system, however, Shadrack Kimaiyo was actually first, with both runners clocking the same time.
Third place went to Ismail Ssenyange (Bulgaria) with 2:24:09 hours.
In the women’s race, the winner was Chelangat Sang (Kenya) with a time of 2:33:09 hours.
Kenyan athletes also triumphed in the half-marathon (21 km). In the men's race, Kennedy Kipkemoi was the fastest with 1:04:35 hours, and among the women, Jacinta Kavindu Paul won with 1:14:44.
In the 10 km distance, Bulgarian runners Ivo Balabanov (30:23 minutes) and Devora Avramova (33:52) were the winners for the third consecutive year.
This year, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) was represented by its own team in the event.
Nearly 8,000 participants from 66 countries around the world took part in the 42nd edition of the Sofia Marathon.
