Real Madrid boycotts Ballon d’Or 2025
Real Madrid will not take part in the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony, which will be held tonight at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris. The decision comes as a result of president Florentino Pérez’s firm stance, as he personally intervened to refuse any presence of the club at the event, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
According to The Athletic, this boycott is the second in a row by the Madrid club. Last year, Pérez chose not to attend after learning in advance that Vinicius Jr. would not win the main prize, which instead went to Rodri. This time as well, despite several nominations, Real Madrid will have no official representation at the gala.
Pérez suspects that last year’s decision was influenced by UEFA’s stance, due to Real Madrid’s support for the European Super League project. As a result, the club also refused to accept the Coach of the Year and Club of the Year awards last season.
Although some voices within the club have expressed disappointment at this hardline position, Pérez remains resolute. Thus, neither club representatives nor nominated players will be present in Paris: Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappé for the Ballon d’Or, Thibaut Courtois for the Yashin Trophy, and Dean Huijsen for the Kopa Trophy.
The 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony will begin tonight at 8:00 PM in the French capital.
