Slovenian freediver sets new world record
Slovenian freediver Alenka Artnik Burghardt has set a new constant weight monofin world record in the Vertical Blue competition in the Bahamas, plunging 123 metres deep, one meter deeper than the record she herself set in 2021, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.
Announcing her new achievement on social media, the 43-year-old said she pulled off the feat "against all odds" and was feeling a huge sense of relief.
"The dive itself felt very good, controlled and relaxed. Actually I think I was so tired from the sleepless night that even my ego didn't have the power to fight it," she wrote on Instagram.
"This mantra came in my mind during the warm up 'I'm love, I choose love' and I kept it until the end of the dive. A strong surface protocol reinforced with some extra 'spicy' words as the stress started to release from my body," she added.
She said making the dive was probably one of the hardest challenges she had ever been through.
Artnik Burghardt, who comes from the coastal city of Koper, has been a freediver for over a decade and has set a number of milestones, including in 2017 when she became the fourth woman ever to dive 100 metres deep and then went on to set several world records. She is considered one of the greatest freedivers ever.
