Moldova completes land clearance for new US embassy
The Republic of Moldova has completed the land clearance phase for the central site where the new campus of the Embassy of the United States in Moldova will be built, Prime Minister of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu announced at the beginning of Wednesday’s government meeting.
He said the project is a key element of the strategic partnership between Moldova and the United States, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
“The Republic of Moldova has completed the land clearance on Tighina Street and fulfilled all obligations assumed for this stage of the project regarding the construction of the new U.S. Embassy headquarters, as well as a public park, while preserving the emblematic gates of the former stadium. For us, it is important to preserve the historical character. This is a very important project for the strategic partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the United States,” Munteanu said.
He added that following the completion of the land clearance phase, the next procedural steps outlined in the land transfer agreement will follow. Moldovan authorities are in contact with the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. government to advance the project.
The prime minister also welcomed the nomination of a new U.S. ambassador to Chișinău, noting that this could further support bilateral cooperation.
The State Property Agency managed the expropriation process, which covered 16 properties belonging to 10 owners. Compensation has been set at 96.47 million lei (approximately €4.94 million), based on legally recognized private assets located on the site. Funds have been deposited into a special account and will be disbursed in accordance with legal procedures upon request by the owners.
The next stage requires the United States to confirm its option to purchase the land and complete a payment of €18 million for the transfer of ownership. After confirmation, Moldovan authorities will issue the handover act and register the property transfer in the real estate registry.
The agreement for the new embassy campus was ratified by Moldova’s parliament in 2023. The project covers the former Republican Stadium site in central Chișinău, spanning approximately 5.2 hectares.
Plans include the construction of a diplomatic campus, public park space, restoration of historic stadium gates, and public art installations. The U.S. side has committed to maintaining public access areas, with total investment estimated at around $250 million.
In April 2025, the U.S. government made its first payment of €3.2 million toward compensation for expropriated property as part of the intergovernmental agreement.
