Italy celebrates its 80th Republic Day anniversary

The President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of Republic Day, sent the following message to the Chief of Defence Staff, Luciano Portolano:

“Eighty years have passed since June 2, 1946, the day Italians completed an unprecedented act of freedom.

With universal suffrage, women and men, together for the first time, decided to leave behind the ruins of war and the atrocities of an oppressive and totalitarian regime, beginning the reconstruction of a free, democratic and republican nation, CE Report quotes ANSA.

On the 80th anniversary of the Republic, we honor the memory of the soldiers who, through the Combat Groups, fought with dedication and courage in the War of Liberation and became key figures in Italy’s rebirth, restoring honor and freedom to the nation.

Today, we are not only celebrating a historical anniversary, but also renewing our collective commitment to uphold, protect and fully implement the values that form the core of our Constitution, our ‘common home,’ which guarantees the life of our national community, our rights and our duties of solidarity.

The challenges and risks affecting our security and well-being today must be faced with determination.

There can be no true peace while threats persist, and there can be no real prosperity while even a part of humanity is forced to live in insecurity.

Italy, together with Europe, is committed to restoring the value of rules in international relations, overcoming a period of constant conflict and building a new and effective security framework for all peoples.

The Italian Armed Forces, a pillar of the Republic and a guardian of the principles of peaceful coexistence among nations, are called upon to contribute to this objective.

With these sentiments, and in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of our homeland, I embrace all members of the Armed Forces and renew my gratitude for their service.

"Long live the Armed Forces, long live the Republic.”
