President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, met today with Germany’s Minister of State for Europe, Gunther Krichbaum, and France’s Minister for Europe, Benjamin Haddad, who are on a working visit to Montenegro.

Milatović thanked Germany and France for their continuous political, expert and partnership support for Montenegro’s accession process to the European Union, CE Report informs via the President of Montenegro’s official website.

He emphasized that EU membership remains the country’s most important foreign policy priority and a strategic objective around which Montenegro must demonstrate the highest degree of seriousness, responsibility and unity.

The interlocutors discussed Montenegro’s European path, reforms in the final stage of negotiations with the European Union, security challenges in Europe, as well as political developments in the Western Balkans.

Milatović stressed that the support of Germany and France is particularly important at a time when Montenegro is entering a decisive phase of European integration. He noted that it is now necessary to maintain the pace of reforms, strengthen the confidence of European partners, and demonstrate that the country has the capacity to fulfil its commitments in the interest of its citizens.

“Montenegro today has a historic opportunity to become the next member of the European Union. This goal is within reach. To achieve it, we must preserve political stability, ensure the full functionality of institutions, and continue reforms without delay,” the President said.

He added that the final phase of negotiations requires the full commitment of all stakeholders, responsible political dialogue, and concrete results in the areas of the rule of law, institutional strengthening, and reforms aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life.

During the meeting, the participants also discussed the upcoming EU–Western Balkans Summit, which will be held on June 5 in Tivat and attended by Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz. They agreed that a credible European perspective for the region is of key importance for the stability, security and prosperity of Europe.
