Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bećirović, stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would mark the end of any divisions and serve as a safe harbor for the country.

Congratulating citizens on Bosnia and Herzegovina Independence Day, Bećirović said that March 1 is a holiday of freedom and dignity, stressing that those who mark it as a day of mourning represent protagonists of the “Greater Serbia” project, CE Report quotes FENA.

He emphasized that without the referendum, Bosnia and Herzegovina would not have avoided such a project, but that citizens decisively prevented it.

He recalled that Bosnia and Herzegovina throughout history preserved its distinctiveness and authenticity — from the medieval Bosnian state, through the Ottoman period, when the Bosnian Sanjak and Eyalet existed, to the Austro-Hungarian period, which also recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina’s distinct status.

Bećirović stressed that March 1 has a special place in the millennium-long history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, noting that an overwhelming majority of citizens, in accordance with the highest European and global standards and under international supervision, decided that Bosnia and Herzegovina should be an independent, sovereign, and unified state.

Speaking about the current political situation, he said that separatists were also defeated in the past year, recalling that they began the year with attacks on the state, but that the president of the entity Republika Srpska, who initiated those activities, ended the year without that position.
