Most Croats in Montenegro see Croatia as their homeland, survey shows
A survey by the Montenegrin agency Spektrum Analitika showed that more than 85% of Croats in Montenegro consider Croatia to be their homeland, while members of other minority communities in the country mostly view Montenegro as their homeland.
According to the data, 85.7% of respondents who identify as Croats consider Croatia their homeland, while 14.3% consider Montenegro their homeland. In Montenegro, according to the 2023 census, slightly more than 5,000 Croats live, representing 0.83% of the total population, CE Report quotes HINA.
When it comes to Bosniaks and Muslims, an overwhelming majority of respondents see Montenegro as their homeland. Among Bosniaks, that figure is 94.9%, while among Muslims it is slightly higher at 95.5%. Bosnia and Herzegovina is considered the homeland by 3.8% of Bosniaks, and Turkey by 1.3%.
According to the latest census, nearly 60,000 Bosniaks and about 10,000 Muslims live in Montenegro.
Among Albanians, identification with Montenegro also dominates. 81.4% of them name Montenegro as their homeland, while 18.6% see Albania as their homeland. There are about 30,000 Albanians living in Montenegro.
According to the same research, three-quarters of residents of Montenegro who declare themselves as Serbs — 76.7% — see Montenegro as their homeland, while 22.3% consider Serbia their homeland. On the last census, 205,000 residents of Montenegro declared themselves to be Serbs.
