Trump tells Zelensky he wants Ukraine war to end quickly
U.S. President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a phone call that he wants to end the war as quickly as possible.
The conversation is described as friendly and positive, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.
"Zelensky then said he hopes the war will finish this year, and Trump replied that the war has been going on for far too long and said he would like the war to end in a month," the outlet quoted one source as saying.
The two leaders also discussed the possibility of holding a trilateral summit involving the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.
Trump told Zelensky that he would work to organize such a summit if the next meeting of U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian negotiators makes more progress.
Trump also reiterated his willingness to give Ukraine significant U.S. security guarantees as part of a potential peace deal with Russia
Axios notes that Trump aims to reach a peace deal by summer, but there are still significant gaps between Ukraine and Russia, particularly on the issue of territorial control in eastern Ukraine.
As previously reported, the phone call between Zelensky and Trump lasted about 30 minutes.
According to the Ukrainian President, the leaders discussed issues that delegation representatives will work on during a bilateral meeting scheduled for Thursday in Geneva, as well as preparations for the next round of trilateral talks.
