Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan shared their views on the peace agenda between the two countries and the normalization process of relations between Türkiye and Armenia at the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Aliyev spoke at the panel titled “Defining Eurasia’s Economic Identity,” held as part of the WEF in Davos, Switzerland. The panel also included Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and Limak Holding Chairwoman Ebru Özdemir.

Aliyev described the initialing of the peace agreement at the summit held in Washington on August 8, 2025, as a “historic achievement,” saying they were pleased with the atmosphere of peace and that cooperation between the two countries had already begun.

Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan has started exporting oil to Armenia, leading to a decrease in fuel prices there, and stressed that both countries should now more clearly demonstrate the benefits of living in peace and security.

Expressing strong optimism about peace, Aliyev said this achievement would make a major contribution not only to Azerbaijan and Armenia but also to the South Caucasus as a whole, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan has unilaterally opened transportation links for Armenia, saying, “Yes, transportation is currently carried out via Georgia. However, one day direct transit through Azerbaijan from Armenia will be possible, and that day is not far away. We have received a request to allow transit from Armenia to Russia.”

Aliyev emphasized that without achieving regional success, it would be impossible to contribute to global issues, adding, “Today, the Azerbaijan–Armenia and Turkey–Armenia normalization processes are progressing in parallel. I believe diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia and between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be established simultaneously.”

“We must open borders with Turkey”

Armenian President Khachaturyan said it was an incredible outcome that two countries which were at war just a few years ago are now focused on peace.

Recalling that goods are currently shipped to Armenia via Georgia, Khachaturyan said he was confident these shipments would one day come directly through Azerbaijan.

Khachaturyan stated that direct transportation links between Azerbaijan and Armenia would be established and that problems dating back to the 1990s would be overcome, saying, “What matters is that we both look forward. If we look back and search for reasons for what happened, we will miss the opportunity.”

He said he was confident that once Armenian and Azerbaijani citizens begin crossing the border and trading with one another, everything would return to normal.

Emphasizing shared interests, he added, “Our interests lie in economic development, prosperity, friendship, peace, and good relations with our neighbors. The same approach applies to Turkey. If we look for our interests, we will find them. We must open the borders with Turkey.”
