Canada backs Ukraine’s NATO ambitions
Only NATO members themselves can take part in decision-making regarding the accession of new countries to the Alliance.
Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated this in response to a question about possible restrictions that could be imposed on Ukraine within the peace proposal put forward by the United States, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.
“The key there is to ensure that conversations about NATO membership rest with NATO itself and in particular Canada has long supported the open accession process for NATO membership, and we continue to support Ukraine’s path towards that,” Anand said.
She stressed that “nobody wants peace more than Ukrainian people.” “We need to do whatever possible to support the peace efforts, to support a potential ceasefire, and then to be there for Ukraine in the reconstruction, and the replenishment of infrastructure, and support for the Ukrainian people,” the Canadian foreign minister noted.
As reported, on December 3, Canada announced the allocation of about 150 million USD in military assistance to Ukraine in partnership with several other countries.
