Rama responds to criticism of Albania’s top cybersecurity ranking

Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama responded again to criticism over an international ranking that places Albania first in the world for cybersecurity.

The government head cited a Euronews report headlined “Which countries have the best cyber security? Albania tops the global list,” describing the country’s transformation from a victim of a major Iranian-sponsored cyberattack in 2022 to the global leader in cyber security, CE Report quotes ATA.

According to Estonia’s e-Governance Academy index cited by Euronews, Albania scored 98.33 out of 100, ahead of major technology powers including Germany, Britain and the United States.

The ranking gave Albania top marks for cyber policy, international cooperation, education and research, critical infrastructure protection, threat analysis, data protection, incident response, crisis management and the fight against cybercrime.

“The 2022 attack could have brought us to our knees. We turned it into an impetus for transformation,” Rama said.

He added that Albania had overhauled its legal framework, centralised cyber defence, strengthened its capabilities and developed new partnerships with the European Union, the United States and leading technology companies.

Rama said cyber security had become as vital as any other strategic infrastructure, particularly as Albania now provides 95% of public services online.

“From the target of a state-sponsored cyberattack to No. 1 in the world for cyber security,” Rama said.
