Bulgaria presents candidate for UN international law commission
The Bulgarian candidate for membership on the United Nations International Law Commission for the 2028-2032 term is Dimana Dramova, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Tuesday. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hristo Dikanski presented Dramova's candidacy to the heads of the diplomatic missions of UN Member States in Sofia.
Dramova's nomination by the Bulgarian government reflects our country's consistent commitment to strengthening the international legal order and to the progressive development and codification of international law, the Ministry said, CE Report quotes BTA.
Dikanski expressed confidence that Dramova's combination of practical experience and academic work will serve as a solid foundation for her contribution to the Commission's activities. Dramova is a lawyer with expertise in the field of international law and over 20 years of professional experience in the Bulgarian diplomatic service.
In her remarks, Dramova emphasized that, if elected to the Commission, she would be guided by the positions of the states, with respect for their choices and through independent and impartial judgment. She outlined three main priorities: greater clarity regarding the legal nature and consequences of the commitments that states undertake; practical responses to challenges affecting their common interests; and outcomes from the Commission's work that are useful and applicable in practice. She emphasized that the Commission should facilitate consensus-building among Member States, even on issues where common positions are still taking shape.
The official presentation is part of the campaign to secure support for Bulgaria's candidacy. The election of Commission members will take place in 2027 during the 82nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York City.
