Dakar prepares for historic 2026 Youth Olympic Games
Senegal is preparing to host the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games from October 31 to November 13, with colorful decorations, installations and statues of the official mascot appearing across Dakar as excitement builds ahead of Africa's first Olympic sporting event.
The Games will bring together approximately 2,700 young athletes from around the world, competing across 25 medal sports, alongside 10 additional sports aimed at encouraging participation and engagement, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
With less than two weeks remaining before the opening ceremony, Dakar's streets, major intersections and historic landmarks have been decorated with Olympic banners, giant billboards and statues of Ayo, the Games' official mascot.
The young lion, whose name means "joy" in the West African Yoruba language, was designed by Senegalese student Ndeye Mariama Diop. Inspired by the lion, a national symbol of Senegal, Ayo represents the energy, enthusiasm and spirit of the country's youth.
Statues depicting the mascot participating in various sports, including basketball, hurdling and rowing, have attracted considerable attention from residents and visitors, many of whom have been stopping to take photographs.
A countdown clock installed outside Dakar's historic railway station is also marking the remaining days before the Games begin.
Around 2,700 athletes to participate
The sporting competitions will take place at eight venues across three main locations: Dakar, the nearby administrative city of Diamniadio and the coastal resort town of Saly.
Several facilities have undergone major renovations, including the historic Iba Mar Diop Stadium and the Tour de l'Oeuf Olympic swimming pool.
The modern Dakar Arena in Diamniadio, which has a capacity of 15,000 spectators, and a newly constructed international equestrian center will also host competitions.
Meanwhile, the coastal waters of Saly will provide the setting for water sports, including sailing and coastal rowing. The official Olympic Village has been established at the Amadou Mahtar Mbow University campus in Diamniadio.
The Games will feature equal numbers of male and female athletes, marking a milestone in gender representation at the event. A Youth Refugee Olympic Team will also participate in the Summer Youth Olympics for the first time.
The sporting program includes traditional Olympic disciplines as well as newer and emerging events such as breaking, skateboarding, wushu and baseball5.
Originally scheduled for 2022, the Youth Olympic Games were postponed until 2026 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event is expected to highlight Africa's capacity to host major international sporting competitions while introducing visitors to Senegal's longstanding tradition of Teranga, a cultural concept centered on hospitality, generosity and welcoming guests.
Senegal eager to welcome the world
Speaking to Anadolu Agency near Dakar's iconic African Renaissance Monument, visitor Jess Mabanzu expressed excitement about the historic event.
Mabanzu encouraged people from across Africa to travel to Senegal and experience the celebrations firsthand, saying the Games would be more than just a sporting competition.
"I invite people from all African countries, from north to south, to come to Dakar and experience this event. I think it will be a celebration beyond sport," Mabanzu said.
Ibrahima Sy, a member of the Olympic preparations committee, said organizers were working intensively to complete the final arrangements.
"We will welcome athletes from all over the world. We want to show Senegal's hospitality to all visitors, especially the athletes," he said.
As the countdown continues, Dakar is preparing not only for a major international sporting event but also for a historic occasion that will place Senegal and the African continent at the center of the Olympic movement.
