Russian Ship Spotted Near Baltic Power Cable

Politics

A sanctioned Russian vessel from the so-called "shadow fleet" performed suspicious maneuvers near a key power cable linking Poland and Sweden, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday on X. Following intervention by the Polish military, the ship moved toward a Russian port, CE Report quotes PAP

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the incident took place Tuesday outside Polish territorial waters, but directly above infrastructure owned by Poland's power grid operator. In response, Poland dispatched the naval survey ship ORP Heweliusz.

A special security meeting is scheduled Thursday at the Polish Navy's command center in Gdynia, with Tusk and top security officials in attendance.

The shadow fleet, made up of poorly regulated tankers under various flags, is used by Russia to bypass Western sanctions and is suspected of sabotage in the Baltic Sea. The EU and UK imposed new sanctions on the fleet earlier this week.
