Moldova Warns of Russian Interference in Upcoming Elections

Politics

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has warned that Russia is preparing an unprecedented operation to interfere in the country’s parliamentary elections this autumn, aiming to take control through political proxies, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Following a meeting of the Supreme Security Council, Sandu said Russian interference poses a direct threat to Moldova’s sovereignty and European future. She outlined ten methods of disruption allegedly financed by convicted fugitive Ilan Shor and coordinated by the Kremlin, including:

  • Electoral corruption and illicit funding (estimated at €100 million via crypto)

  • Disinformation campaigns

  • Paid protests

  • Cyberattacks on election systems

  • Church influence in favor of foreign interests

  • Online radicalization and extremist messaging

  • Use of influencers to oppose Moldova’s EU path

  • Diaspora disruption

  • Criminal group involvement

  • Targeted destabilization in regions like UTAG and Transnistria

“These actions aim to increase tensions, erode trust in institutions, and even provoke violence,” Sandu said. “We must remain united and vigilant. Moldovans—not Moscow’s money—must decide our future.”

She stressed the need for stronger institutional cooperation and public awareness, calling on all citizens to help protect democracy and ensure free and fair elections.
