Trump Plans to Speak with Putin to Discuss Potential Ceasefire in Ukraine

Politics

US President Donald Trump announced he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in an effort to secure a temporary halt to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, The New York Times reported Sunday, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

“We want to see if we can bring that war to an end,” Trump said aboard Air Force One. “Maybe we can. Maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance.”

Trump’s comments come as negotiations continue over a 30-day ceasefire, with key points reportedly focusing on territorial concessions and control over vital infrastructure, including power plants. Trump added, “It’s a lot of land,” without providing further details.

US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, who recently met with Putin in Moscow, called the discussions “positive” and said progress was made in narrowing differences between Russia and Ukraine.

Despite ongoing aerial strikes, Trump is seeking Putin’s support for the 30-day ceasefire approved by Ukraine last week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Putin of stalling negotiations while repositioning Russian forces to strengthen his bargaining position.
