Canada's New Prime Minister Slams US Secretary of State Rubio at G7 Meeting

Politics

At the G7 summit in Quebec, Canada’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister Mark Carney sharply criticized US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for calling Canada the “51st state.” Carney firmly stated that Canada will “never, ever” be part of its southern neighbor, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

During his first official press conference, Carney prioritized addressing US tariffs, pledging to protect “Canadian workers and their families” from unfair trade policies. When asked about Rubio’s remarks—echoing past statements from former US President Donald Trump—Carney dismissed them as “crazy.”

In response to whether he would seek assurances from European allies that Canada would not become part of the US, Carney was unequivocal: “We will never, ever, in any way, shape or form, be part of the United States. America is not Canada.”

Highlighting Canada’s distinct identity, he pointed to his diverse Cabinet, saying, “You would not have that Cabinet in America.” Carney also stated that he has no immediate plans to visit the US but looks forward to speaking with Trump “at the appropriate moment.”
