USR Demands Dismissal of Electoral Authority President Toni Grebla

Politics

The Save Romania Union (USR) has called on the leadership of Romania's Chamber of Deputies and Senate to convene a joint session to dismiss Toni Grebla, president of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP), CE Report quotes Agerpres

In a press release, USR criticized Grebla’s tenure as "catastrophic" and stated it is unacceptable for him to remain in charge of the institution tasked with ensuring fair elections.

"What confidence can voters have in an institution that overlooks zero campaign expenditures or whose president has dubious ties to extremist figures?" asked Ionuț Moșteanu, leader of USR MPs. He accused Grebla of threatening Romania’s democracy and urged the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL) to support his removal.

USR had previously demanded Grebla's dismissal after the chaotic and allegedly fraudulent June elections. Narcis Mircescu, leader of USR Senators, argued that Grebla’s actions have "destroyed Romanians’ trust" in their democratic right to freely elect leaders.

The party also highlighted failures in the AEP's oversight of campaign financing. They pointed to discrepancies in candidate Calin Georgescu’s financial declarations, which claimed zero campaign expenditures, despite the known costs of electoral campaigns. The General Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating undeclared campaign expenses and related electoral crimes.

USR emphasized the urgency of ensuring the integrity of Romania’s electoral process, calling Grebla’s continued leadership a danger to democracy.
