Bashar al-Assad Granted Asylum in Russia Following Regime Collapse

Politics

Deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow, where Russia has granted them asylum, according to Russian state news agency TASS, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

“Guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia has offered asylum to Assad and his family,” a Kremlin source told the agency. The source emphasized Russia's continued support for a political resolution to the Syrian crisis, urging the resumption of UN-mediated peace talks.

The developments follow renewed clashes between Assad regime forces and opposition groups, which escalated on November 27 in rural areas west of Aleppo. Opposition forces, bolstered by defecting military units, launched a swift offensive, capturing key cities and, ultimately, the capital, Damascus, on Sunday. This marked the collapse of Assad’s regime after 13 years of civil war.

Russian officials are reportedly in contact with Syrian opposition leaders, who have assured the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions in Syria, according to TASS.
