Trzaskowski Refuses Far-Right Demands in Debate
Slawomir Mentzen of the far-right Confederation party invited the two remaining presidential candidates to a YouTube debate to “ink a declaration” on issues important to his voters ahead of the June 1 runoff. Karol Nawrocki, backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, signed the declaration. However, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski refused to sign but agreed on four of the eight points, CE Report quotes PAP
Trzaskowski promised not to raise taxes, send Polish troops to Ukraine, restrict cash access, or tighten gun regulations. But he opposed Mentzen’s demand to block Ukraine’s NATO bid, saying, “I want Ukraine to be part of Europe, not in Putin’s hands.”
The two disagreed on EU treaties and free speech laws. Trzaskowski opposed limiting freedom of expression but supported curbing hate speech.
After the debate, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski posted a video of Trzaskowski and Mentzen talking in Mentzen’s pub.
