Poland Condemns Katyn Memorial Desecration

Poland

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has condemned what he called the desecration of a memorial to Polish prisoners of war in Mednoye, Russia, CE Report quotes PAP

In a statement on X, Sikorski said crosses were removed from headstones at the Polish War Cemetery, which honors victims of the 1940 Katyn massacre, calling it "unacceptable interference by Russia in historical truth."

He said the act was not vandalism but carried out by cemetery officials under orders from the local prosecutor, making it a decision of the Russian state.

The Katyn massacre saw the Soviet NKVD execute nearly 22,000 Polish officers and intellectuals. Moscow denied responsibility until 1990. The incident remains a major point of tension in Polish-Russian relations.
