Moldova to Provide Free School Meals Starting September 2025

Moldova

Starting September 1, 2025, all schoolchildren in Moldova will receive free meals, Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced today. He emphasized that the state will fully cover the costs, dismissing any claims about parental contributions, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

“This initiative, proposed by President Maia Sandu, aims to invest in students and young people. Currently, free meals are provided for primary school students, but from September, an additional 160,000 children in grades 5-9 will also benefit,” Recean explained.

The program will require an annual budget of approximately 600 million lei. “It’s a significant investment, but it will enhance education and support children's health,” the Prime Minister added.

The government approved the initiative last week, ensuring free meals for all students in grades 5-9 in general education institutions.
