EU warns of possible jet fuel shortages amid Middle East tensions

The European Union should prepare for possible shortages of jet fuel if the current situation in the Middle East continues until the end of May, the European Commission said.

Meetings of the Oil Coordination Group and the Energy Union Security Working Group were held, bringing together experts from the European Commission, industry representatives, member states, the International Energy Agency, and NATO.

They discussed the security of oil and gas supply in Europe as the conflict in the Middle East approaches its 10th week, CE Report quotes HINA.

“As far as crude oil and petroleum products are concerned, jet fuels remain a key concern. While the market is managing supply pressures, commercial stocks are decreasing due to the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The Oil Coordination Group and the Energy Union Security Working Group stressed that the EU should begin preparing for potential consequences if the situation continues beyond May,” the Commission said in a statement.

It added that there is currently no fuel shortage in the EU, that the gas supply situation remains largely unchanged, and that the refilling of storage facilities has already begun.

In case of need, oil and gas reserves can be released, and experts warn that in such a scenario, member states should act in a coordinated manner and align demand-side measures to achieve effective results.
