EU plans major new sanctions on Russia
The European Union intends to significantly expand sanctions against Russia in the coming months, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told a German newspaper, news.ro reports, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
“EU sanctions have already cost Russia a great deal, depriving Russia’s war machine of more than 1 trillion euros (1.16 trillion dollars), and for the autumn I am proposing the most extensive sanctions lists since the beginning of the war,” she told German daily Die Welt, according to Reuters.
“Once adopted, these would immediately increase the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by one-third. The pressure must continue to increase until Moscow ends the war.”
Kallas did not provide further details about the timing or specific measures included in the new sanctions package.
In July, the EU approved its latest package of sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, imposing restrictions on the country’s banking sector and cryptocurrency networks.
The European Union has adopted 21 packages of sanctions against Russia since the beginning of the war. According to the European Commission, the measures currently target nearly 3,000 individuals and entities.
