Greek tax workers halt preventive audits

Greece

Greek tax office workers began industrial action on Monday and will refrain from carrying out preventive tax audits until August 26, the Greek public broadcaster ERT reported.

Giorgos Tsagarakis, Secretary General of the Federation of Employees of Greece’s Ministry of Finance, said the protest was organized over staff shortages, increased workloads, inadequate compensation for overtime and a lack of safe working conditions during inspections, CE Report quotes BTA.

He added that opportunities for dialogue with management had been exhausted, leaving workers with no alternative but to take industrial action.

Tsagarakis also raised concerns about tax fairness, arguing that preventive inspections disproportionately affect small and medium-sized businesses, while larger companies have greater opportunities to benefit from special tax provisions and other mechanisms.

Despite the action, tax office employees will remain at their workplaces and continue providing services to the public.
