Mortal Kombat returns to cinemas with new sequel
The Mortal Kombat franchise returns to the big screen.
The new chapter based on one of the most popular—and profitable—video games ever will be released in Italian cinemas on May 6, distributed by Warner Bros..
The film, produced by New Line Cinema, promises to dominate the box office, strengthening a gaming brand that has earned over $5.5 billion, CE Report quotes ANSA.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, already behind the 2021 reboot, the movie raises the stakes. “Many think it’s just a game adaptation, but we expand everything into three dimensions,” the director said at a Los Angeles press conference. “Characters we knew from the console are now played by extraordinary actors.”
Five years ago, the film’s theatrical success was dampened by the pandemic and its simultaneous streaming release. Mortal Kombat grossed $84.4 million on a $55 million budget, while the original 1995 adaptation exceeded $122 million.
The screenplay by Jeremy Slater throws the protagonists into a decisive battle for humanity’s survival. After the tournament truce, Earthrealm’s champions must face an invasion from Outworld forces led by the tyrant Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).
Returning cast members include Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Josh Lawson (Kano), and Chin Han (Shang Tsung).
Joining them is fan-favorite Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. The New Zealand actor, known for The Boys, said the film was physically more demanding than anything he had done before.
Urban admitted feeling pressure not only because of his co-stars’ martial arts skills but also due to fans’ expectations—especially his own children, who are fans of the game.
The film also marks a shift in gender representation. McQuoid introduced characters like Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), and Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) to strengthen female presence in the story.
