Albania secures 20-year US LNG deal, plans Vlora Energy Center upgrade
Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama stated that Albania has taken an important step toward strengthening security and energy independence through a strategic cooperation agreement for the development of the Vlora Energy Center and the supply of liquefied natural gas.
In the “Notes of the Week” feature, through a video released from Berlin, Rama announced that the agreement was reached in close partnership with the United States of America, ensuring Albania’s supply of American liquefied natural gas for a 20‑year period, CE Report quotes ATA.
He stated that the investment to modernize the Vlora Thermal Power Plant—originally built to run on oil—will allow it to switch to natural gas, significantly boosting both the efficiency and sustainability of electricity production in the country.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this development lays a solid foundation for diversifying Albania’s energy sources and strengthening the country’s energy sovereignty, while is also expected to stimulate new investments in the sector.
He further highlighted that expanding energy capacities will support the development of advanced technologies, including data centers and artificial intelligence programs, which are projected to play a key role in the coming decade.
In this context, Rama stressed that Vlora is expected to become an important regional energy hub, not only for production but also for the distribution and export of natural gas through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). He pointed out that the agreement also includes investment in connecting Vlora by pipeline to Fier, where the gas pipeline passes.
