Marija Dimitrova elected president of Macedonian Film Professionals Association

Producer Marija Dimitrova has been elected as the new president of the Macedonian Film Professionals Association (MFPA), which announced that at the regular annual meeting of MFPA, the members voted by majority to grant Dimitrova a four-year mandate.

There were two candidates for the position of president of the Association, CE Report quotes MIA.

Dimitrova’s opponent was Martin Ivanov, an experienced film editor who has edited films in various formats and genres throughout his career.

The new president, Marija Dimitrova, comes to this role with extensive professional experience and achievements in the production side of cinematic art. Dimitrova holds a degree in Producing from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts – Skopje and a degree in Informatics Engineering from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics – Skopje.

She has been actively involved in film production since 2013 and has rich experience in creating both short and feature-length films. Between 2014 and 2025, Dimitrova worked on 16 short fiction and documentary films, screened at prestigious international festivals including Sundance, Hot Docs, Tallinn – Black Nights, and Sarajevo, earning numerous awards, MFPA reported.

In 2016, Dimitrova founded “List Production.” As a producer of feature films, MFPA notes that she stands behind three highly successful achievements in Macedonian cinema:

  • The film Sisters (premiered at Karlovy Vary, Special Jury Prize, Macedonian Oscar candidate) was screened at over 40 festivals and was one of the first Macedonian films on Netflix.
  • The film Household for Beginners, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Queer Lion award, was also a Macedonian Oscar candidate, distributed by Universal Pictures and Focus Features, and became the first Macedonian film with global distribution.
  • Her most recent production, Era, premiered in Brooklyn, with its Macedonian premiere at the Cinedays Festival, where it won Best Film.

Dimitrova is a member of the European Film Academy as well as the prestigious producer networks EAVE and ACE Producers. In 2022, she was selected as Producer on the Move at the Cannes Film Festival. She has been a member of MFPA since 2018, according to the announcement.

The previous president of the Association of Film Workers, serving two terms, was Igor Ivanov-Izi, a prominent director and screenwriter with many years of professional experience in the film industry.

During his tenure, MFPA strengthened its role in promoting Macedonian cinema and organized significant initiatives to support film professionals. Under his leadership, the Association actively participated in organizing the national film review Golden Frame, encouraging dialogue and visibility for creative filmmakers and technical professionals, as well as initiatives to improve the status and working conditions of film workers in the country.

With the election of the new leadership, the Association of Film Workers of North Macedonia continues its mission to support, develop, and promote Macedonian cinema and the film profession, MFPA reported.
