Rob Reiner, Michelle Singer found dead
American filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer were found dead on Sunday inside their home in Southern California, with police investigating the circumstances of their deaths as a homicide, city officials announced.
While police declined to publicly identify the two deceased, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom issued separate statements confirming the deaths of the 78-year-old director and his 68-year-old wife, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.
“This is a tremendous loss for our city and for our country. Rob Reiner’s contribution has had an impact across American culture and society, and he improved countless lives through his creative work and his activism for social and economic justice,” the mayor wrote.
Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told reporters Sunday afternoon that patrol officers were called to the director’s residence, where they discovered two bodies.
Detectives from the Robbery-Homicide Division were awaiting a search warrant before entering the home to conduct a thorough investigation of the scene, Hamilton said.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement on social media describing the case as an “apparent homicide,” although Hamilton emphasized that no suspect had been identified as of Sunday evening.
The cause of death will be released by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Hamilton said. However, AFP, citing NBC, reported that the couple died from stab wounds.
As an actor, Reiner became widely known for his role in the hit television sitcom All in the Family, which aired on CBS for nine seasons from 1971 to 1979.
He later went on to enjoy a highly successful career as a director, helming films such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me, A Few Good Men, Misery, and The American President.
His wife, Michelle, was a photographer, and a photograph she took of Donald Trump appeared on the cover of the book Trump: The Art of the Deal.
Reiner was born in New York City and was the son of comedian and actor Carl Reiner. He was also well known for his political activism.
In the 2004 U.S. presidential election, he supported Democratic candidate John Kerry and appeared in advertisements critical of then-President George W. Bush. Reiner also backed Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and Hillary Clinton.
His first marriage was to actress Penny Marshall, who was also a producer and director. His second marriage was to actress Michelle Singer, with whom he had three children.
According to People magazine, citing “multiple sources,” the couple’s 32-year-old son Nick is considered a suspect in the two killings. He has reportedly struggled with drug addiction and homelessness.
