North Macedonia selects its Oscar entry for 2027
Kosara Mitikj's debut feature film, "17" (2026), has been selected as the official Macedonian submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
The decision was made by the Macedonian Film Professionals Association's Oscar selection committee, officially approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, CE Report quotes MIA.
The committee is chaired by producer Marija Dimitrova and includes director Antonio Mitrikjeski, cinematographer Dejan Dimeski, production designer Ivan Bartling, director Gjorgi Unkovski, actress Teuta Ajdini Jegeni and producer Sara Ferro.
Produced by Black Cat Production, "17" is "a story about the agony of silence and the power of solidarity," Mitikj said. Producer Tomi Salkovski added that representing the country is both a great honor and a serious responsibility.
"17" had its world premiere in the Perspectives program at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival and has since won 11 international awards.
The film stars Eva Kostikj, Martina Danilovska, Eva Stojchevska, Petar Manikj, Irena Dimeska, Luna Bejkov, Hristijan Risteski, Alina Hristovska, Dame Joveski, Jovan Todorov, Mina Jelushikj, Todor Stojkovski, Ivo Jezdikj, Ana Stojanovska, Zhaklina Stevkovska, Sashko Kocev and Oliver Mitkovski.
The 99th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles. The Oscar shortlist will be announced on Dec. 15, 2026, followed by the official nominations on Jan. 21, 2027.
