Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone team up for new project
Miss Piggy is finally expected to have her own solo movie, with Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone involved in the new project.
According to the BBC, Lawrence revealed that she will co-produce the film—focused on the diva puppet from The Muppets series—alongside her close friend, Stone, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast, she said:
“I don’t know if I’m allowed to announce this, but I’ll do it anyway. Emma Stone and I are producing a movie about Miss Piggy.”
She added that American actor and playwright Cole Escola, who starred in the successful Broadway comedy Oh, Mary!, is writing the script. Lawrence mentioned that this Miss Piggy film could mark the first time she and Stone appear in a movie together.
“It’s kind of dark that we haven’t done a movie together yet,” she joked.
Lawrence shared more details about the project during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night.
She said she first discussed the idea with a friend during the pandemic lockdown and thought it would be “hilarious” if Miss Piggy were to get “cancelled.”
The actress clarified that this isn’t necessarily the plot of the film, but it helped spark the idea for a starring role for the character, calling Miss Piggy a “feminist icon.”
Lawrence also revealed that Stone is “the one obsessed with the Muppets” between the two of them, while she described herself as “the ideas girl.”
Miss Piggy was originally a secondary character in The Muppet Show in the mid-1970s.
However, she quickly stole the spotlight with her confident personality and glamorous appearance.
She is also known for her complicated, on-and-off relationship with the Muppets’ main character, Kermit the Frog, and has starred alongside him in several films.
The Muppet Show, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, is set to return with a special episode featuring American singer Sabrina Carpenter.
Disney announced the return of the beloved characters to The Muppet Theatre to deliver “a variety show full of music, comedy, and plenty of chaos.”
