Italy's Uffizi embarks on 50 million euros renovation

The Uffizi Galleries are undergoing an extensive transformation, with dozens of projects—some already completed, others underway or about to begin—worth a total of €50 million. Over the next two years, the investment will reshape the museum complex, including the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Pitti, and the Boboli Gardens.

Uffizi Director Simone Verde presented an update on the projects alongside the museum's staff, emphasizing the importance of recognizing "the tremendous collective work carried out by all personnel," CE Report quotes ANSA.

"This is an operation of unprecedented scale and depth," Verde said. "The museum complex will emerge even more beautiful and will further strengthen its role as one of Italy's most important cultural icons in the world."

The projects cover every major area of the museum's operations, including redesigned exhibition spaces, restoration of artworks and historic interiors, the repurposing and improved lighting of galleries, expanded visitor services, and new measures aimed at making the complex more welcoming and accessible.

Among the major restoration projects at the Boboli Gardens is the €3 million functional restoration of the Amphitheatre, which will once again host public performances. Restoration of the Neptune Fountain and its island will also be completed through a €7.6 million investment.

At Palazzo Pitti, the top floor will be converted into a new museum space as part of a €4.9 million project. Additional major works are planned for the Medici Treasury on the ground floor and the Palatine Gallery.

At the Uffizi Gallery, a new introductory section dedicated to the history of the collections will be created with an investment of €2.4 million. Construction of a new entrance in the Monumental Hall is also scheduled to begin in the coming months.

Further projects include the refurbishment of the Flemish rooms, the opening of a gallery displaying Andrea del Castagno's portraits of the Illustrious Men, and a space dedicated to ancient inscriptions. The museum has also begun replacing its entire system of exhibition labels and signage, while significant attention is being devoted to upgrading conservation safety systems throughout the complex.
