Spider-Man overtakes The Odyssey at Italian box office

Spider-Man has dethroned Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

The latest Marvel superhero film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, debuted at the top of the Italian Cinetel box office. In its first five days in Italian theaters, it earned €15.92 million (€15,923,545) and attracted nearly 2 million moviegoers (1,953,576 admissions), CE Report quotes ANSA.

Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the film is also exceeding expectations in the United States, where it opened to $168 million on Friday at the North American box office.

After three weeks in theaters, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey dropped to second place, with a total gross of €37.08 million, including €5.83 million this weekend.

Minions & Monsters rounded out the top three, earning €261,957 over the weekend for a five-week total of €7.31 million.

In fourth place was Toy Story 5, which earned €89,810 over the weekend and has grossed €9.07 million after seven weeks.

Fifth was Deep Water – Nightmare from the Abyss, with €56,766 for the weekend and €351,860 after two weeks.

Sixth place went to the French comedy Family Therapy, which took in €38,443 over the weekend for a two-week total of €173,254.

Boosted by summer outdoor screenings, Le città di pianura ranked seventh with €22,975 (up 10%), bringing its 45-week total to €2.72 million.

In eighth place, Michael earned €22,260, reaching €25.66 million after 15 weeks.

Rounding out the top 10 were Blue, with €17,714 for the weekend and €120,609 after two weeks, and The Devil Wears Prada 2, which earned €17,074 this weekend for a total of €32.09 million after 14 weeks.

Overall, Italian cinemas generated €3.63 million in ticket sales this weekend, down 29% from the previous weekend's €5.09 million.
