Dwayne Johnson’s ‘The Smashing Machine’ Premieres at Venice Film Festival
The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne Douglas Johnson (better known as The Rock), is a gripping entry at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. The film is based on the true story of Mark Kerr, a legendary champion in wrestling, vale tudo, and MMA, and a member of the prestigious UFC Hall of Fame, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Through fights, battles, and inner struggles, the film takes viewers beyond the spotlight and sporting victories, into the emotional chaos and contradictions of a man destined to become a legend.
“I wanted to act in a film like this, different from my usual roles. In Hollywood, it's always about box office, and they push you into a corner to represent only what audiences expect from you,” said Johnson. “I've made a lot of successful films, some funny, some not so much—but this time, I wanted something deeper, something from my past.”
Johnson describes Kerr not just as the world’s greatest fighter, but emphasizes that the film is also a love story—about the sport and about Mark’s relationship with Dawn.
The film explores Kerr’s intense sacrifices, including his struggles with addiction. As Johnson noted, “Mark overdosed twice and is lucky to be alive—that’s what makes this story so powerful.”
Director Benny Safdie explained his choice:
“In the '90s, MMA was experimental—different fighting styles competing with one another in a raw, underground sport. It was also a tight-knit community, where fighters knew and respected one another. That contrast intrigued me and I wanted to explore that bond between fighters.”
