First Korean jury president at Cannes Film Festival
The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be chaired by leading South Korean director Park Chan-wook, organizers announced.
In a written statement, festival organizers described Park as “one of the most fascinating figures of contemporary cinema,” highlighting his creativity, visual mastery, and his ability to capture the complex contradictions of men and women with unusual destinies — qualities that have given contemporary cinema truly unforgettable moments, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
It was also noted that this marks the first time in the festival’s history that a Korean figure has been appointed to this role.
Commenting on his selection as jury president, Park said that “in this age of hatred and division, gathering in the same hall to watch a single film together — with our breaths and heartbeats in harmony — is in itself a touching and universal expression of solidarity.”
Park Chan-wook has a long history with Cannes. He won the Grand Prix in 2004 for Oldboy, the Jury Prize in 2009 for Thirst, and the Best Director Award in 2022 for Decision to Leave.
