Robert Downey Jr. returns as villain in Avengers Doomsday
Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, stars of the Avengers films, revealed details about the upcoming Marvel Studios superhero movie Avengers.
Doomsday, presenting its first trailer to cinema owners gathered at CinemaCon 2026, who hope the film will be a major box office success at the end of 2026, Reuters reports, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
Robert Downey Jr., who previously played Iron Man, will take on the role of villain Doctor Doom in Doomsday. The film will be the first Marvel production, owned by The Walt Disney Company, to bring together the Avengers and X-Men.
“Honestly, I didn’t imagine I would reunite with this incredible team after such a glorious run of success and creative joy — not to mention a new character,” Downey Jr. said on stage.
Chris Evans, who portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America in earlier Marvel films, said his return was unexpected.
“I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday there is a real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers now,” he said.
In scenes shown at CinemaCon, Thor — played by Chris Hemsworth — says, “We’re going to need a miracle,” followed by the appearance of Rogers.
The audience reacted with loud applause and cheers, prompting Downey Jr. to ask for the trailer to be shown a second time.
Marvel films have generated nearly $33 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film franchise in history.
Avengers: Endgame is currently the second highest-grossing film of all time.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, the same day as the third installment of the Dune franchise by Warner Bros., setting up a box office clash dubbed “Dunesday.”
Cinema owners expect both films to be among the biggest releases of the year.
Disney also promoted The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release in May, and a live-action version of Moana, scheduled for July.
